The broken thumbie makes for riding in the big ring a high torque experience. Grinding up hills, a replacement thumb shifter is on order.

Here is the breakdown for the parts at the 3000km service interval:

Part Retail Cost with sponsored discount

KMCZ51 6/7/8sp Chain $8.50 6.37

MF-HG22 6 sp freewheel 14.50 10.87

UN53 68x122 bottom bracket 24.00 18.00

Taxes (14%) 6.58 4.93

Total 53.58 40.17

Time took about one hour of professional mechanic's time (about $30) and some grease and chain oil. A marginal return considering replacement cost is $99, but worth it when the cartridge BB is upgraded, as it takes away the facing issue from those bearings. Also the drivetrain may have a longer life than the OEM spec. Stay tuned!

Net result is that it rides as well as a brand new Giant Sedona DX.

Flat tyre at last! This was caused by a 1 cm squared piece of clear glass, that produced a pst pst pst noise(in time with rotation of wheel).

Was repaired that day in less than 15 minutes using $2.25 worth of new parts, and patched the original tube and kept as spare.

The new drivetrain and BB are performing exactly as expected, has made the machine quiet and more efficient. Restored probably 2000km of useful riding and diminished possibility of snapped chain. Details of parts cost and model numbers at later date.

km 3200-ish maintenance at last!

Performed 2000km maintenance on drivetrain and bottom bracket on January 29th. Did not matter that was over 1000km over the interval as parts had to be replaced anyway. It is ever so quiet now without that enyh-enyh noise from the bottom bracket bearings.

Cost of maintenance (approximately):

BB $18
Chain $5
Freewheel $12
Oil & grease $5
Taxes $5
Time: 45 minutes

Since then rear brake, as water in brake line becomes frozen

Also, plastic front shifter knob broke off in -22C weather, relegating all pedalling to be done in big ring.
