Replaced front brakes with Shimano 'Acera' brakes (BR-M422) (cost was $20 and 30 minutes), and are much easier to adjust now.

Back brakes functioning well enough to lock up back wheel, despite wear and tear on shoes.

Drivetrain about half worn, yet still function relatively efficently.
