km 13758.9

**Notes from 09.11.04 km13492:

Axle in back wheel broke catastrophically. Kept riding. About 1000m after that derailleur goes into spokes, locking up wheel. Repair work commenced immediately at 1000 and took 60 minutes: replaced axle and cones using parts from abandoned child's bicycle. Aligned dropouts. Aligned derailleur hanger. Purchased replacement derailleur hanger. Inspected spokes, they are OK.

** Notes from 09.11.19 km 13758.9

0830-0900 Scrubbed brake surface on back wheel. Replace back brake shoes. Wiped down reflective surfaces. Noted chain wear to .75% over original length. Noted wear on bearings in front hub as lateral play.

When I went on the Great Bike Ride I took a spare rear axle and derailleur, just in case the same thing happened to me.

(I thought it was fairly likely, since I had 20kg in the rear panniers).

Would have preferred to upgrade axle with a Wheels Manufacturing 4130 cro-mo part, except LBS did not keep in inventory at the time.

The one from the child's bicycle is holding up so far so good.

Noticed in realigning dropouts that taps line up all the way back in slots, then don't line up at slot tips. Took a little extra manipulating to get them to tolerable spec.

    Happy new year Humble!
